September Gallery Show Announcements

September is shaping up to be a very energized and fruitful time. I have the distinct honor and humbling challenge of mounting two exhibitions within a couple weeks of each other. Each is pushing me into uncharted territory, strange mediums and fresh ideas. Hope to see you there! Fall River on the 5th and Provincetown on the 26th.

Cutouts, Mooncussers and Other Tales from the Outer Cape

I am very excited to open up my debut solo show at Hammock Gallery in Provincetown in a couple weeks. I will be out there installing in the week leading up to the opening day: the 18th of September. I am coming back the following weekend for an artist talk and reception on the 26th. I am inviting out-of-towners to come through on that day for the talk, I will be more refreshed to chat and dig into the work. The show is titled "Cutouts, Mooncussers and Other Tales from The Outer Cape" and is a culmination of ideas and works that I have built up over the past ten years or so. Cape Cod is a special place and very formative to my evolution as an artist. The show will explore my personal history on the cape, specifically my Grandmother's "Cape House" that I spent a week each summer and Christmas at as a child and more time after moving to Boston and checking in on her in her twilight years. After she passed away, I made a photo series trying to save the essence of the light of the house, it was her whole ethos of how to live, how to enjoy nature and let routines guide you. This photo series "Cape House" will anchor the show which then expands out to various other mediums and forms exploring Cape history, non-human intelligence, memory objects and more. I really can't wait to share this body of work with you. I know its tricky to get out to PTown, my suggestion is to take the ferry from Plymouth or Boston and make a smashing day trip or weekender out of it. Artist Talk & Opening, Sept 26th 5-8pm

The debut solo showing by Jak Ritger brings together the Boston-based artist & writer’s practice of deep research, site-specific installation, photography and moving image. Local legends and personal histories serve as a raw material for a new body of work spanning above, below and in-between Hammock’s historic architecture with video projection, collage and for the first time on view, paintings by the artist. “Cutouts..” constructs a land-bridge to the unconscious by recombining material past and tracing a path the spirit takes after passing on. The show surfaces evidence of a wild and eldritch Cape washed ashore by the midnight tide.

Anemic Triangle - Paul Gondry, Jak Ritger, Carl Simmons

In the run up to my solo show, I (perhaps hubristically) agreed to join a new mysterious and shadowy movie theatre franchise called "Anemic Triangle". I was first contacted on Instagram via an account that I already followed, but don't remember seeing before. The CEO informed me that the company —which focuses on converting cultural spaces into temporary and permanent cinemas– would be taking over the beloved left-field MoCA in Fall River. I was of two minds about the proposition: it felt kind of sketchy to throw my hat in with this company, would this mean the end of FR MoCA? But, if the CEO is to be believed, this could be an opportunity to save this space from the wrecking ball. Anemic Triangle will be donating all of their take from September's Cinema Experiment towards the "futurability" of Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art. Perhaps splicing in my frame in with two of my favs: Paul Gondry and Carl Simmons is the best direction after all. In the preparation for this group exhibition it came into ghostly focus like a film print hitting the developer, this is surely shaping up to be an all timer, its chaotic and serene, its forgotten cinema spirits and futuristic hallucinations, its lived-in feelings of home, a shattering dance-down-the-street homage to precious precarious reality of cinema art, its what it means to constitute a public and the moloch forces retching to obliterate it all. Please please please do not miss this one, it might just be your last best chance to see what it means to have an artist-run contemporary art museum in Massachusetts.
